Join us in congratulating and recognizing CSHP doctoral student, Rossmary D. Márquez-Lameda, who has just published a case study to SAGE Research Methods: Doing Research Online.
 
Her case study, titled "Using Remote Communication Technology and Digital Tools to Conduct a Qualitative Interview Study with Forced Migrants: Venezuelan Women's Access to Healthcare in Peru", describes how Rossmary leveraged the usage of several digital tools to overcome the challenges of conducting a qualitative interview study with Venezuelan migrant and refugee women in Peru, a vulnerable community, while she was in the United States.
 
Rossmary said: “Conducting a study remotely with a vulnerable group while I was in a different country was incredibly difficult, but possible. I conducted 21 interviews with Venezuelan migrant and refugee women in Peru over a period of 3 weeks, while I was in the United States. The purpose of the study was to understand how these women access sexual and reproductive healthcare services. After my plan to travel to Peru in the summer shattered, the project felt too complex. I have never been to Peru and had limited connections on the ground. I also had to navigate the logistical challenges of conducting a project from a different country. Months of planning took place before I could start recruitment and interview my first participant. As part of this case study, I shared in detail how I navigated those challenges to accomplish this project and the lessons I learned as I completed the data collection for this study”
 
Rossmary conducted the study as part of her qualifying exams, some of the strategies she described as part of this case study included: establishing connections with local researchers, recruiting participants using WhatsApp, conducting interviews through Skype, and managing incentives remotely.
